To apply for a permit, go to the header Apply and under the Permits section click All.

Choose the appropriate permit type.

If you’re unsure which permit type to choose, please email us at building@louisvilleco.gov BEFORE you complete the application process. Failure to choose the correct permit type will cause you to re-submit.

If the property address is not populating, please leave out the directional (N, S, E, W or North, South, East, West).

Contacts Step:

 You must provide the following contact types:

- Owner (the property owner)

- Applicant (whoever is logged in is defaulted as this)

- Contractor

If you do not know who the contractor or subs will be yet, please add the contact type TBD for these contacts.

Approval Process

Over the Counter Permits

These permits must be applied AND paid for at the same time in order for staff to receive your application. If you do not pay for it first, staff will never be notified to review your application.

When your permit has been approved, the applicant contact type is emailed saying the permit's been issued and your building permit (print icon) and inspection card are now available to be viewed online.

To view your documents, go to your permit record and click on the Attachments tab.

*Please note that these documents must be printed off and at the job site for your inspections.

Permits with a Plan Review

When your permit has been approved, the applicant contact type is emailed saying you can pay for your permit fees online.

*Please be aware that our online portal cannot take payments that exceed $10,000. If yours does, we will request a check to be mailed to City Hall or you can pay for it in-person.

Once the fee has been paid for, staff will approve your payment. This is typically done within a couple hours of when you’ve paid.

The applicant contact type will receive an email saying the permit's been issued and your building permit (print icon), inspection card, and plans are now available to be viewed online.

*Please note that these documents must be printed off and at the job site for your inspections.

 

To view your permits, go to the header View and click on My Permits.

You will then see a list of all your permit records. To view a specific permit, click on the permit number. Now you will be viewing that individual permit where you can see/do the following:

- Permit status

- Permit fees

- Plan review status

- Upload new documents  

- View building permit (print icon), inspection card, and plans

- Contact info

- Inspections (Request an inspection or view inspection results)

To view your permit, go to the header View and click on My Permits.

You will then see a list of all your permit records. To view a specific permit, click on the permit number.

Click on the Reviews tab. There you can see the review status and who your reviewer(s) is by clicking on the department.

If you need to resubmit, the applicant contact type will receive an email from the reviewer informing what needs to be resubmitted.

If you need to submit any building plans, we require you to submit the entire set of plans, not single sheets.

To upload new documents for a resubmittal, click on the Attachments tab. There you can select a document type and upload new documents.

If you are resubmitting building plans, please select the Building Plans (Arch/MEP/Struc) document type. If you cannot find a document type that suites what you are uploading, please use the option Miscellaneous Document(s).

*Please note that all plans must be in PDF.

Submittal Process

Go to the header Building Safety Information and under Other Forms, click on Plan Changes Form.

You must submit this page in front of your revised building plans so staff is aware of what is being revised.

Then to view your permit, go to the header View and click on My Permits.

You will then see a list of all your permit records. To view a specific permit, click on the permit number.

To upload new documents for a permitted revision, click on the Attachments tab. There you can select a document type and upload new documents.

If you need to submit building plans, we require you to submit the entire set of plans, not single sheets with the Plan Changes Form as the file’s first page.

*If you are submitting building plans, please select the Building Plans (Arch/MEP/Struc) document type. If you cannot find a document type that suites what you are uploading, please use the option Miscellaneous Document(s).

Approval Process

When your license has been approved, the applicant is emailed saying the license has been issued.

To view your license, go to the header View and click on My Contractor Licenses. Select your most current license and click on the print icon.

To see a PDF version of your license, click on the print icon.

To view your license, go to the header View and click on My Contractor Licenses. Select your most current license and click on the print icon.

You will not be able to view your license until the Building Department has reviewed your application / payment.

You will receive an email saying your license has been issued once your application / payment have been approved.

To view your invoice and pay online, go to the header View and click on My Invoices/Payments. 

When your fees have been invoiced, the applicant contact type receives an email saying they can now pay online.

We do not allow credit card payments that are over $10,000 or more to be processed online. If your amount is over that, you must pay for your permit in person or mail a check to City Hall.

Once you have paid online, you will receive a receipt via email from our third party cashiering vendor. Please note that this emailed receipt is the only copy you will receive. You will not be able to access this receipt from our online portal. If you need another copy, please contact the Building Department.

Once you have paid for your permit, you will not be able to view your permit online until the Building Department approves your payment. This usually takes 1 business day. You will receive a follow up email saying your payment has been approved and your permit has been issued.

To request an inspection, go to the header View and click on My Permits.

You will then see a list of all your permit records. To view a specific permit, click on the permit number.

Click on the Inspections tab. Under this tab there are two sections: Required Inspections and Optional Inspections.

Please always select your inspections from the Required Inspections section. The Optional Inspections at the very bottom of the page is to be used only if you cannot find the inspection you need or if that inspection type has already been approved but you need another one for that project.

Check in the check box the inspection you need. You may select multiple at once if needed.

*Please be aware that the inspection types Building Other, Electrical Other, Mechanical Other, and Plumbing Other are inspections that should only be used if you cannot find an inspection that fits the inspection criteria you need. These options should be used as a last resort.

Please mention the day you would like the inspection, a good contact number for whomever will be there for the inspection, and any additional notes that the inspector may need to know.

These notes could contain a lockbox #, gate code, more detail about the type of inspection needed, or a preference on a time frame.

Our cutoff time for next business day inspections is 4PM. If you are trying to select the next day but it is greyed out and are unable to click on it, that is because you are requesting after 4PM.

To view today’s scheduled inspections, on the home page, click on the third tile named Today’s Scheduled Inspections or go to the header View and click on Today’s Scheduled Inspections.

In the search bar, enter your permit number (RES-XXXX-XXXX) or property address to see if you are on the list.

If you want to know a time frame for your inspection, call the inspector’s phone number who is assigned to your inspection.

To view your inspection results, go to the header View and click on My Permits.

You will then see a list of all your permit records. To view a specific permit, click on the permit number.

Click on the Inspections tab, and click the link on the inspection type you would like to view.

The inspector also emails a copy of the inspection result to either the contractor or whomever was at the job site during the inspection.
