E-Bikes Allowed on Streets and Trails

Class 1 and Class 2 electrical assisted bikes (e-bikes) are allowed on all streets and trails unless specifically prohibited with signs posted giving such notice. An e-bike is defined as an electrical assisted bicycle with two tandem wheels or two parallel wheels and one forward wheel with fully operable pedals, an electric motor not exceeding 750 watts of power and a top motor-powered speed of 20 miles per hour. At this time all streets and trails are accessible to e-bikes.

Industry advocates promote the use of e-bikes as a means to get more people on bikes, including older adults and people with physical limitations. Their use can encourage people to ride more often and to more distant locations. They also reduce the difficult of riding in hilly areas, which are present in some parts of the City. Commuting Solutions, the regional multi-modal transportation advocacy organization, also supports the use of e-bikes on the recently opened US 36 Bikeway as an alternative form of transportation.

The City wishes to remind all riders that no person shall operate a bicycle or e-bike at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under existing conditions. To learn more about the different classes of e-bikes, visit the following sites:
