Composting is a popular method of diverting organic waste away from landfills and contributing to the circular economy. Republic Services provides compost collection and disposal services to Louisville residents participating in the city-wide solid waste program. Participants can upgrade to a 96 gallon compost cart at no extra cost. Leaves, grass clippings, and branches can also be added to the compost cart. Residents participating in the city-wide solid waste program through Republic Services can take part in the new Curbside Leaf & Branch Collection Event. Republic will collect up to twenty (20) compostable bags and an unlimited number of bundles of shrubbery and tree limbs cut to 4’ length, no more than 18” in diameter, and tied with twine or rope. Compostable bags can be purchased at home improvement retailers.

City of Louisville Branch Recycle Site

• Available to Louisville Residents. Proof of residency will be checked at the gate by City staff.
• This site only accepts woody plant material such as tree and shrub debris. Leaves and grass clippings are not accepted.

April - October:

• Open the first Saturday of April - October from 8 am - 1 pm.
• Mulch give away hosted first Saturday of April and October 8am-1pm during branch drop off.
• Mulch pick up is self-serve at gated entrance and is available year round. Staff refresh materials weekly. 

November-March:

• Open by appointment only. Appointments can be scheduled 7am-3:30pm, Monday- Friday. Contact Kayla- Parks Operations Administration 303.335.4776
• Christmas tree recycling will be available for scheduled dates each year.
• Mulch pick up is self-serve at gated entrance and is available year round. Staff refresh materials weekly. 

Directions

From downtown Louisville at the intersection of Main Street and Pine Street, take Pine Street east. It will cross Highway 42 and turn into Empire Road. Remain on Empire Road about 1.3 miles. The recycling site will be on your right just before the Louisville Cemetery.

A great alternative to raking and bagging leaves is to mow them and put the nutrients back in the soil, which is what the City’s Parks Department does. Turning leaves to mulch is good for the grass and inhibits weed growth.

The horticulture experts over at Colorado State University’s Extension Office in Longmont shared some handy information with us on this topic from Michigan State University.

EcoGro Certified Class 1 garden compost is available to Louisville residents for self-service pickup on the first weekend of the month starting in April. Compost is limited in supply and is available until all material is gone. Proof of residency will be checked at the gate by City staff. 

EcoGrow is an organic compost produced using feed stocks of primarily ground tree and limb, leaves, grass, source separated food, and brewery residuals. Naturally contains essential micro and macro nutrients and is low in salts. View compost spec sheet.

This top soil compost can be used as a soil amendment or top dressing to increase water retention and acts as a great source of nutrients including nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and sulfur while also being low in salts. Can be used with all plant types and soil types, everything from sandy to clay soils. Great for turfgrass, gardening, flowers, trees and shrubs. Screened to 1/2″ minus for a fine texture with some woody particles for improved soil aeration and drainage.
