One thing we all know and love about Louisville is that it's a glorious place to ride a bike.

Whether you're cruising our vast trail system, running your errands, or meeting friends for a quick bite, it's a great way to get some exercise and spend time exploring our city.

Lately, many of our residents and visitors have made the switch to E-bikes, or electric bicycles. If you don't own one, you probably know someone who does. E-bikes look like regular bikes, but they have an electric motor to assist riders. They are fast, efficient, and can help us reduce our carbon footprint.

But do you know the difference between e-Bikes? Did you know that any bike/scooter over 750 watts has a different classification, and different rules apply? Before you purchase an electric bike or scooter, check out our 'Spot the Difference: E-Bikes' Poster or review the information below that explains the difference between each class of e-bike.

Class 1 E-Bikes

  • Pedal-assist only
  • 20 MPH max speed
  • Allowed on bicycle/pedestrian paths

Class 2 E-Bikes

  • Pedal-assist & throttle
  • 20 MPH max speed
  • Allowed on bicycle/pedestrian paths

Class 3 E-Bikes

  • Pedal-assist only
  • 28 MPH max speed
  • Speedometer required
  • Not allowed on City trails, paths, or parks
  • Age 16+ to operate
  • Under 18 years of age must wear a helmet

E-Bikes can also be dangerous. Across the country, collisions involving E-bikes are increasing. If you or your children are riding an E-bike, here are a few things to keep in mind.

1. E-bikes are fast! There are three classes of e-bikes: 1, 2, and 3. Class 3 E-bikes can go up to 28 miles per hour! With great speed comes great responsibility. Consider taking things slow, especially at intersections.

2. E-Bikes must YIELD to pedestrians! Whether you're on a bike or an e-bike, you must yield to pedestrians.

3. The rules of the road still apply. Posted speed limits and traffic signals should be observed regardless of what mode of transportation you're using. Electric bicycles must follow many of the same state laws as conventional bicycles.

4. Helmets, helmets, helmets! Helmets can reduce the risk of a head injury in a bicycle collision by up to 85%. Make sure you and your family have helmets that fit properly.

Remember, all bikers of all ages should follow these basic safety tips:

  • Pay attention to your surroundings. Do not text, call or wear headphones while riding.
  • Discourage kids from taking passengers on the back of their bike.
  • Ride on the right, in the same direction as traffic and use bike lanes when available.
  • Stop and look both ways before entering the street.
  • Wear a bicycle helmet that fits properly.
  • Respect traffic lights and stop signs.
  • Alert others such as pedestrians that you are approaching. They may not hear you.

In Louisville, we prioritize the safety of everyone, however you choose to get around. That's why we #ShareTheRoad and #ShareTheTrail.
