Habitat/Land Management Opportunities (as available):
Adopt An Open Space or Trail Program: Be a land steward and care for an Open Space area or Trail. Adoptees can remove litter, control weeds, paint or repair fences and handrails, maintain trails, etc. Open Space will help you identify tasks to complete throughout the season and we will supply you with trash bags and gloves. Time Commitment: One year with at least one hour spent on three work days and 10 hours on your Adopt area; more work days are highly recommended. For full program details, click here. Please email Catherine Jepson, Open Space Specialist, at CatherineJ@LouisvilleCO.gov for a list of available properties.
Pulling for Louisville: Help combat noxious weeds by attending our Pulling for Louisville event series. Each summer, we host volunteer events on several different Open Space properties where participants pull, dig, or clip weeds. No previous experience is required to attend these events. Find and register for upcoming Pulling for Louisville events here.
Wildlife-Related Opportunities:
Bird Surveys: Calling all Birders! Open Space staff needs help documenting bird species observed or heard at different Open Space areas. This data will assist Open Space staff in creating bird species checklists for various Open Space areas. This role requires good bird identification skills, including the ability to identify birds by sight and/or sound. Time commitment: could be a one-day event or multiple days.
Creative Opportunities:
Volunteer Naturalist: Lead a guided hike or program on an Open Space property of your choice covering a natural world topic of your choosing. Possible topics could include guiding a wildflower hike in the spring, leading a geology presentation or hike or searching for signs of wildlife (scats and tracks). Interested volunteers would be required to attend training with the Open Space Specialist on developing and leading programs. Staff would also help assist you in creating your plan and accompany you during the program. Time commitment: could be one or more programs.
Nature Poetry: If you have a creative writing interest, submit your nature poetry. The Open Space Division will post your poetry on our website and on our Facebook page (Fans of Louisville Open Space). Time commitment: could be one or more poems.
Open Space Photographer: Help us capture the beauty and wonder of everything Open Space by taking pictures. Time commitment: could be one or more pictures.
