Home MenuGrazing
The City of Louisville utilizes targeted grazing as one of many ways to meet vegetation and fuels reduction management goals.
2024 Fall Grazing
This fall, goats and cattle will be grazing Davidson Mesa, North Open Space, and Dutch Creek Open Space properties. Dates are subject to change due to weather, etc.Cattle Grazing
Cattle will be grazing on Smooth Brome and other non-native pasture grass.
- September 16 - North Open Space
- 4th week of September- Davidson Mesa Open Space
Goat Grazing
- October 2024 - North Open Space
Goats will be grazing woody vegetation to reduce ladder fuels, reduce vegetation height and vigor, and control noxious weeds and other invasive plants.
To ensure the safety of both visitors and livestock:
- Keep pets on leash and under physical control at all times. Trail closures may be necessary to protect livestock if dogs are not kept on leash.
- Do not touch or climb on the electric fence at any time. An electric fence will contain the cows. Another non-electrified fence will be installed adjacent to the trail to keep trail users away from the live fence.
- Do not feed or pet the livestock.
What to expect:
- The trail will remain open but temporary trail closures may occur to move livestock from one grazing area to another.
- Livestock will be on the property throughout the days and evenings for the duration of the grazing period.
- There will be a reduction in vegetation height following the grazing time.
- The contractor will have two to three herding dogs in the grazing areas to protect and manage the goats.
- Grazing may occur close to private fence lines, but livestock will be contained by separate fencing installed by the City's contractor.
- Goats may graze vegetation encroaching from private property onto Open Space.
