Last year, the City adopted the 2018 series of International Building Codes, which includes a requirement that new homes have a radon mitigation system. About 50% of Colorado homes have unhealthy radon levels, which is associated with higher risk of cancer. Requiring mitigation system to be installed up front can save a significant amount of money for a homeowner. Installation with new home construction costs around $300-$1,000 whereas installation in an existing home may cost more than $3,000. More information on the effects of radon and how to reduce exposure to radon can be found at: www.BoulderCountyRadon.org.
