Karen Roehl
The Language of Abstraction
When painting abstracts, I like to work with acrylics. Because of their fast drying time, it’s easier to paint in layers which is very important to my work. My process begins entirely intuitively, filling the canvas spontaneously with overlapping marks using a variety of mediums including (but not limited to) paint, ink, graphite, china marker, and sometimes oil bar. In subsequent layers, I look to simplify that chaotic first layer by consolidating areas to create shapes. Ultimately, I build up the layers and carve out the composition as I go. I am never sure where a painting will lead me or what the final outcome will be. On average, each painting takes from 4 to 8 layers to complete.

Susiehyer
Painting Nocturnes
Susiehyer will demonstrate 2 ways to approach some of the challenges presented by painting nighttime scenes. The same principles can be applied to seeing and painting outdoors at night, painting a nocturne from a photograph, or transposing a daylight scene into a nocturne painting.. By organizing the big shapes into clearly defined values, a strong structural foundation is created for the painting to be constructed around, which simplifies the process. Value, temperature and color choices will be discussed, and a number of examples of the artist'snocturne paintings will be on view.
