Sustainability advocates often tout a “green economy, educators want to prepare workforce-ready students and environmental educators promote “environmental literacy.” It’s time to intimately connect these parallel pathways to inspire and educate young people how all careers and livelihoods can nourish their families, communities and the living systems upon which we all depend.  This program is about connecting environmental principles and concern with ALL careers, not just those we normally think of as “environmental careers” (which make up a small slice of the economy).    

This program will include a talk and a panel discussion with students, educators, youth development advocates and members of the business community.  We will consider how to provide young people the information, tools and perspectives to purposefully incorporate an understanding of living systems into all areas of the economy through any and all careers they go into.  We will explore / cover the following areas and more:  

·     Case studies of how people in manufacturing, finance, hospitality and others incorporate environmental knowledge and concern.  

·     Specific environmental principles that can be at the core of all careers and thus help create a “green economy” by influencing the entire economy not just a small subset made up of what are currently thought of as “green jobs.”    

·     Ways for businesses – even those that aren't typically considered "green" – to use the ALL Careers approach for reaching out to young candidates for internships and paid positions.

·     A review of resources that are available for implementing the ALL Careers approach.

·     Discussion on next steps to make connections between environmental knowledge/concern and ALL careers.    What part can your organization or business play in these efforts?
