Over 80% of all landscape and garden plant problems are associated with the condition of the soil, yet soil is the resource that gardeners usually know the least about. This class discusses the basic soil properties that gardeners should understand in order to create and maintain a healthy landscape. Appropriate soil management practices for Colorado landscapes will be discussed, as well as harmful or unnecessary practices that should be avoided.
Dr. Reeder worked 30 years for the USDA Agricultural Research Service as a Soil Scientist conducting research studies on soil properties. Since retiring, she works as a consultant for the CSU Soil Testing Lab, and as a soils instructor for the Colorado Master Gardener Program and the Denver Botanic Gardens Rocky Mountain Gardening certification program. Her passion these days is to help gardeners come to know as much about their soil as they do about their plants, and to learn how to manage soil health in order to achieve healthy landscapes.
