The Cultural Arts Master Plan (CAMP) includes goals and strategies for integrating the arts, culture and humanities with community design, economic development, education and other development initiatives to strengthen the quality of life and small town character of Louisville. The five main goals of CAMP are:
- Expand visual arts, performing arts, cultural history, natural history, and natural sciences
- Provide diverse and engaging cultural activities in the City
- Foster Louisville’s creative industries
- Strengthen the quality of life and small town character of Louisville
- Enhance Louisville’s identity as a vibrant cultural destination
To help accomplish these goals, the Cultural Arts Master Plan outlines specific strategies and action items. It includes a matrix prioritizing action items and identifying potential partners in the community, and provides a clear path for implementing the Cultural Arts Master Plan.
History of the Cultural Arts Master Plan:
In 2013, the Comprehensive Plan tasked the City of Louisville with creating a Cultural Arts Master Plan (CAMP). A CAMP Committee was formed from members of the Louisville Cultural Council (LCC) and City staff to solicit public opinion, research best practices, and create a document outlining recommendations to City Council. Public input was solicited through a series of public meetings in 2015, in addition to surveys of residents and a survey of artists and arts organizations. After compiling feedback from the community, four main areas of interest were identified: Facilities, Marketing, Public Art, and Professional Development Needs.
Focusing on these areas of interest, CAMP was developed to provide background on the City’s involvement with arts and culture and to outline a vision for promoting public and private advancement of arts and culture to meet the needs of the community.
The Cultural Arts Master Plan was unanimously approved by Louisville City Council on April 18, 2017.
