 Planning and Zoning

The Planning Department administers land use regulations in the City including zoning, development review, historic preservation, and long-range planning. They also serve as the first contact for developers and landowners who are considering new development or changes to existing development.

In addition, the Department handles updates to, and the implementation of, the City's Comprehensive Plan. The plan defines the long-range goals and intentions regarding the direction of future development within the City. It contains elements on land use, transportation, community facilities, design, historic preservation, and housing.

Building Safety

The Building Safety Division oversees all building and construction in Louisville. It issues building permits and contractor’s licenses, conducts building, electrical and plumbing inspections, and handles water and sewer tap fees. 

 

 

 

Current Review Times

Any Commercial work – including signs and fences

6 weeks

Any Residential work with plan review

6 weeks

Contractor licenses received via e-mail or fax

1 week

Over the counter permits (where the structure has been constructed after 1956) and contractors licenses received in person

Over the counter on Tuesdays from 8:00am-12:00pm

Over the counter permits, where the structure was constructed prior to 1955

Minimum 1 week

Changes to an existing issued permit

*Must include original set of approved plans

Minimum 3 days

Starting 01/20/15 - Over the Counter Plan Review for minor permits every Tuesday from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm.

Permits that qualify are: fences, decks, pergolas, sheds, small residential remodels including basement finishes, hot tubs, gas lines, and size change or new opening for windows or doors.

Any work being done on the exterior where the structure was constructed prior to 1955 cannot be reviewed over the counter

Note: Review times are based on a complete permit submittal. Submittals requiring more information may extend the posted review time.
