  • Introduction: Classic Rock to Classic Strings: Led Zeppelin, Beethoven, and more

They are young, hip, and smart.  Their new album just won an award.  They were chosen and mentored here in Boulder by one of the worlds top string quartets, Takacs.  Oh yeah, and they play Led Zeppelin.

They are the hippest new string quartet in the country and they are performing in Louisvilles intimate 100-seat Arts Center on Friday, February 15 at 7:30 pm. It's a perfect Valentine's Weekend Date Night!

Andrew Giordano, Joshua Ulrich, Andrew Krimm, and Zachary Reaves chose the name Altius from the Olympic motto Citius, Altius, Fortius, which means Faster, Higher, Stronger.  It is a fitting name for men who spend much of their free time enjoying the outdoors when they arent breaking down the conventions of their musical genre.

Their new album Dress Code is a case in point.  The playlist includes Haydn's 'String Quartet in C major, Op. 74, No. 1' and an arrangement by cellist Zachary Reaves that blends or perhaps better said, mashes up, two Led Zeppelin pieces, Stairway to Heaven and Kashmir.   The playlist gets back to Haydn and then interjects another Reaves mash up of Dave Brubecks Take Five with Michael Jacksons Beat It.  Are you getting dizzy yet?

A recent review in the online Review Graveyard put it bluntly.  Reading through the track listing for this album I couldn't help thinking This just isn't going to work. Sure, it sounds novel, but . . . That's just crazy.

The review goes on to say, But, it does work! And rather impressively too.

In addition to being innovative, Altius are technically excellent.  The renowned music blog, I Care If You Listen calls their sound "rich" and "captivating".   Their musicianship and versatility receives critical praise.  They have received numerous awards, but it is their charisma and dynamism that captures peoples hearts.  And the mash-ups.
